UNEXPLODED WWII BOMBS

Several thousand unexploded bombs are estimated to remain buried beneath the city, with official figures from the Berlin Senate indicating more than 4,500. Since 1947, specialized bomb disposal units have recovered and defused over 1.8 million explosive devices, ranging from aerial bombs to grenades and ammunition. When a large bomb is discovered, entire neighborhoods are evacuated so that disposal teams can either remove the detonator or carry out a controlled detonation on site.
