SCHWERBELASTUNGSKÖRPER
“Heavy load-bearing body” is a 12,650-ton concrete mass built by the Nazis in 1941 to test whether Berlin's swampy soil could support a massive arch planned for “Germania” - a megalomaniacal fantasy of a new capital. A narrow, eight-foot shaft descends 60 feet into the ground, pressing the immense weight into the soft soil. Over two and a half years, the cylinder sank 19.3 cm and tilted 3.5 cm due to uneven settling during construction. As World War II escalated, the Germania project was abandoned, and the structure remained - slowly sinking into Berlin’s marshy ground.
